ASU at Lake Havasu, Assistant Teaching Professor in Communication

ASU at Lake Havasu invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Communication. We seek to attract an active, culturally, and academically diverse candidate, who will teach four courses per semester in the Communication Department, deliver excellent in-class instruction, and participate in service to the campus, community, university, and profession as appropriate. Possible assigned courses may include, but are not limited to, introduction to human communication, communication theory, rhetorical criticism, conflict resolution, communication approaches to popular culture, rhetoric and media criticism, television studies and criticism, and research methods in communication. Beyond assigned courses, additional activities may include supervision and mentorship of senior capstone projects and student internships. Though research is not a requirement of the position, there may be opportunities to collaborate with other faculty and community partners on projects and grants.

This is a full-time, 9-month, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position, and the position is renewable on an academic year basis, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The appointment will begin in Fall 2024 (August 16, 2024).

Qualifications

 Required Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D. in Communication Studies, or a related field, by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated familiarity with “best practices” in undergraduate education.

 Desired Qualifications

• Experience teaching fundamental courses in human communication such as introduction to communication, communication theory, rhetorical criticism, conflict resolution, and research methods; as well as specialized media courses such as communication approaches to popular culture, rhetoric and media criticism, and television studies and criticism. Capacity to teach both humanistic and social scientific perspectives is preferred.
• Experience teaching in multiple modalities.
• Demonstrated professional engagement with students inside and outside of the classroom.
• Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations.
• Experience using a learning management system, such as Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom, etc.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in both professional practices and as a contributor to an inclusive working and learning environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with faculty, staff, and students.

Statement of Essential Functions

• Teach four undergraduate courses per semester in the Communication Department at ASU at Lake Havasu. Assigned courses may include, but are not limited to, introduction to human communication, communication theory, conflict resolution, rhetorical criticism, communication approaches to popular culture, rhetoric and media criticism, television studies and criticism, and research methods in communication. Assigned courses are taught in person at the ASU at Lake Havasu location in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
• Supervise and mentor student capstone projects and internships each semester as needed or requested.
• Participate in service to the campus, community, university, and profession as needed or requested.
