High School Principal
Pella Community School District is seeking a High School Principal to serve 800 students and 100 staff members in a high achieving school system.
Successful candidates will have a desire to explore current trends in education, engage community partners and offer solid leadership to students and staff.
The Pella CSD is located in south central Iowa. It has a strong community base and heritage that is supported by several local industries.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Administration Current certification for appropriate building level Experience as a principal preferred, but not required.
POSITION GOAL: To provide educational leadership that improves the academic achievement of students through the coordinated efforts of staff members. In addition, the position requires management skills to ensure a seamless operation of the details in the educational process.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Appointment -- All building principals will be appointed to their position through the recommendation of the superintendent of schools. The principal shall be properly certified according to the regulations of the Iowa Department of Education.
- The principal shall serve under the direction of the superintendent and shall cooperate in the general organization and plan of procedure of the school.
- The principal shall be considered the professional advisor to the superintendent in matters RELATED to the school. The principal shall be called upon to contribute to the general policies and procedures of the school. The superintendent shall welcome the administrative views of the principal.
- Although the appointment of the teachers is made by the board upon the recommendation of the superintendent, the principal shall be consulted in the rating, recommending, and selection of teachers.
- The principals shall not permit the solicitation of teachers or pupils on the part of agents, advertisers, or solicitors, or give out student or personnel rosters to these persons.
- The principals shall not permit persons to speak to the pupils of their buildings without the consent of the superintendent if any doubt arises in the mind of the principal regarding the suitability of the speaker or the topic.
- The principals may suspend pupils as deemed advisable. In all cases of suspension, they shall immediately notify the superintendent and president of the Board of Education with a statement of cause and shall also notify the parent or guardian of the pupil suspended.
- Operates as the instructional leader of the building(s).
- Monitors student achievement and confers with staff regarding student performance on important academic assessments.
- The principal shall have primary responsibility to supervise teaching personnel and clerical personnel in the building. The principal shall cooperate with the maintenance supervisor in supervising the custodians in the building and shall cooperate with the lunch program manager in supervising the lunch program personnel in the building.
- The principal shall work cooperatively with other principals in the supervision of teaching personnel who work in the building and in other buildings.
- The principal shall visit classrooms regularly to determine the quality of teaching and to evaluate teachers on the basis of evaluation proceedings outlined elsewhere in the policies.
- The principal shall assist teachers in whatever capacity possible in order that each teacher has an effective instructional program; and should guide teachers in their methods of developing and using lesson plans and shall have these plans handed in.
- The principal shall assist teachers in the disciplining of students.
- The principal shall have general supervision of the grounds and building wherein assigned and shall see to the care, cleanliness, and safety factors of both.
- The principal shall supply periodic reports to the superintendent of schools relative to: 1)Changes in curriculum 2) Student achievement 3) Severe discipline cases and dispensation 4) Problems or accomplishment in ancillary services to the school program
- The principal shall be responsible for maintaining good public relations with the community and for utilizing fully the community resources to enrich the learning program.
- Maintains the fiscal integrity of the academic part of the building.
- The principal shall work in close harmony with those teachers involved in extracurricular activities, to foster a smooth-running operation.
- The principal shall consider the health and well-being of students enrolled by directing the school nurse program for the school and requesting services when needed.
- The principal shall develop disaster evacuation and shelter plans and conduct disaster drills to assure the safety of all personnel in the building. (Fire -- tornado -- bomb -- etc.)
- It will be the responsibility of the principal to see that the records to be maintained in the building are up-to-date and accurate.
- The principal is to develop the teacher and student schedules for the building, cooperating where necessary with other principals, especially in scheduling teachers who teach in two or more schools.
- Development of handbooks for the teachers and students in the buildings shall be the responsibility of the principal of each building.
- The principal shall work cooperatively with the staff and other administrators to prepare and execute an in-service program for the improvement of personnel.
- The principal shall take an inventory of the school property of each school building at least once during the school year.
- The principal shall be responsible for all school-related activities in the building.
- The principal shall be encouraged to attend professional educational meetings and state conferences annually. Each principal may attend a national convention every two years.
- The principal shall direct the collection of monies in the building for activities, fees, lunch tickets, etc., and shall be responsible for these funds being taken or sent to previously assigned locations, such as the bank or superintendent's office. The responsibility includes continuous and careful review of the balance in the clearing account line items and knowledge of inventory for various line items.
- The principal shall approve purchase orders from teaching personnel in the building for instructional supplies and equipment before they will be approved by the superintendent.
